Report for Trent Radio Board Meeting 19Jun02 From the General Manager John K Muir 19 June 02 During the shutdown Paul Cleveland and Sarah Dauncey did a fantastic job of spring cleaning. The place looks great! The day before, all the equipment was removed from the studios, and taken out for repair. This really does seem to be the best way of doing it, as it makes the house cleaning go much more quickly when everything is stripped out. And once everything is cleaned, its a joy to re-install the gear. During the last week of the Spring season, the Summer Programme Co-ordinator hiring committee, made up of Barb Woolner, Ryder Ziola, and myself, met to review applications, conduct interviews, and decide on a ranking. On Friday, 03 May 2002, three days before the job was to start, we received word from HRDC that we've been awarded a grant of $4,384 under the Summer Career Placement programme towards a total outlay of $5,984 under the Summer Career Placement programme - our share of this grant is $1,600. This means that we'll have funding for a Summer Programme Co-ordinator for sixteen weeks, and another six weeks of funding for painting & maintenance. This latter position has been posted. The Trillium application request for additional information was finally completed and received by them on 06 May 02. The delay means we will have to wait until the next round for assessment, and the local office tells me that I may not hear anything from them until mid-August. I must apologise to the Board for that delay. As you know, I'd put a great number of things aside to meet the early April target, and the request for more information took four weeks to finish during the challenging time of season change and cleanup. The last blast of winter winds confirms that we'll need a new roof before they come again. I'm getting quotes now and have a ball park estimate of $5,000 to $6,000. This was something I'd hoped we could do next summer, but I'm afraid we better get on to it now to forestall even more extensive repair costs if we don't. We have a tenant, Sue Russell, who works for MNR, and her cat will be sharing the apartment on an eleven month lease from 01Jun02 to 30Apr03. Sue did her first under grad degree at Waterloo in 1976, and another one at Trent in 1996. Our thanks to Miriam Stucky for helping Sue find us. The eleven month lease works out well. We'll be able to repair the floors in the living room and south bedroom without disruption. Next summer it will be time tackle the hall and north bedroom. We elected to entirely re-floor these two rooms with a wood laminate at a cost of $1,665.00. There are also some minor plumbing repairs to be made. We have received a $10,000 advance on next year's student memberships Glen Caradus has been doing some gardening and suffered a self- inflicted injury requiring some several stitches. The Return of Information to the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Business Services completed - thanks in full to Emily Addison. No update on Trillium or the roof work. I shall be out of town June 22-July7 and am making arrangements for smooth operations. I am impressed by the work of the Summer Programme Coordinator. Sincerely, John K Muir.
