TRENT RADIO MINUTES 7 March 1997 MINUTES OF A MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF TRENT RADIO, held at the Senior Common Room, Peter Robinson College, Trent University, Peterborough Ontario, on 7 March 97. P R E S E N T: Barb Bell, Franca Cioffi, Andrew Fogarasi, Dean Girard, Lisa Howard, & Danielle Tassie. R E G R E T S: Emily Watkins. Also present: Barb Woolner, PD; & John K Muir, GM The meeting was called to order at 2:25 p.m. with Andrew Fogarasi acting as chair and Lisa Howard acting as secretary. With all the directors being notified of the time and place of the meeting, and a quorum present, the meeting was declared duly constituted. An agenda was agreed upon and discussion followed. Previous Minutes: Upon a motion duly made, seconded and carried, be it resolved that; the minutes from the meetings held 10 January 97 and 7 February 97 are accepted. Financial Report The report was for the period since 31 December 96. More than expected for full-time student memberships was received. John still has to do a confirmation of numbers with the university. John has rectified a Bell Canada's mistake in the telephone line rental bill. The general funds are low because we have been using them for new equipment this will change. Trent Radio has received the T- shirts with the new frequency 92.7 on them. These will be sold as follows; $15 for XL, $20 for XXXL and operators may buy one XL for $5. Personnel: Upon a motion duly made seconded and carried, be it resolved that; due to shortage of funds, John Muir be laid-off as of 14 March 97. He will be paid an honorarium of seventy dollars per week and continue as General Manager starting on 24 March 97, until such time as Trent Radio can afford a full-time wage. Programme Director's Report: There was no Programmed Director's report this month. Barbara promises to make a report for the next Board of Directors meeting. Committees: Fundraising & Special Events: Barb Bell has already sold about seventy tickets for the buses to Casino Rama as part of her latest fund-raising idea. She has had some trouble getting the casino to stick to their deal (which included dinner), but she overcame this easily. The tickets are twelve dollars for a return trip to Orillia (including an all you can eat buffet as arranged). Propaganda & Publications: Trout Rodeo is out. Dean Girard thanked Tony Tarle for his help with the publication. Dean has also included a thank-you to Power Broadcasting in advance for the use of their tower (they have graciously agreed to lease antenna space to us transmitter at no charge). It was noted that Jean Reno now has a show from noon until 1 p.m. on Wednesdays. It's called World Music Sampler. A notice for the sale of tickets to Casino Rama was also included in Trout Rodeo. Though, as Barb Bell pointed out, the date should be changed to April 11 from the 12th. Norm McHardy is working with Dean on a guide for sponsors. Dean is also working with Danielle Tassie on a what-is-Trent-Radio flyer. Special Programming: Franca Cioffi is making an inventory of the cassette tape collection, to see which areas need improvement. She is working on organising an open house for the frequency change. John Muir is to contact Catfish Willie as regards the Trent Radio sign (on the outside of the building). Catfish designed the sign, and John is wondering if he would be willing to alter it to reflect the frequency change. Radio Reconnaissance & Outreach: Danielle Tassie has been involved in International Women's Day programming. She will work with John and Dean to reach out to the outlying areas who may soon be receiving Trent Radio's signal. John has ordered subscriptions to the weekly newspapers in these areas and has suggested a connection with the community links show could be made. John also suggested that perhaps editors of weeklies could be interviewed regularly for this show. Danielle is working on a list of local libraries so that we can distribute Trent Radio propaganda. A version of the Arthur article announcing the frequency change has been written by Lisa Howard. However, Lisa has decided to let Andrew Fogarasi make some changes to the draft. The final product will be co-written (dammit) and submitted at the time of the frequency change. General Manager's Report and Frequency & Power Boost: The power supply for the transmitter is not working. This changes the schedule of events somewhat for the frequency change. John Muir will try to book a new inspection date with Industry Canada. It is estimated that at best it will mean a month long delay at worst more. Harris (the company who sold us the transmitter) has dropped the price of the transmitter by one thousand dollars (about a quarter of the original price). Promethean is to have first crack at repairs, otherwise the transmitter will be sent to California. John also reported that the C.D. rack is filling up and that this needs looking into. Any Other Business It was noted at this time that several people have had trouble working with a volunteer. Complaint indicated that the volunteer did not listen involving others in long distracting discussions. On one occasion, when the volunteer refused to leave the building when asked. Eventually they did leave, and subsequently attempted to file an assault charge having had their shoulder touched while being asked to leave. It was reported that the police did follow up with a meeting held at Trent Radio. The police officer advised that since Trent Radio is private property, delegated representatives of Trent Radio may use 'reasonable' force when asking a person to leave. It was noted that no force was used in this case and the touch on the shoulder was used to attract the volunteer's attention. It was reported that the management of Trent Radio councils those delegated to use suasion and the services of the police rather than physical force as the primary means of eviction. Operators and others so delegated have the responsibility and the authority to ask those who are being disruptive to leave, and to ensure that it is done. If this were not the case, Trent Radio operators, for instance, might feel uneasy working late when surly or drunken guests might be on the premises. The programmer has been asked to stay away from Trent Radio for a period of two weeks. It was noted that the Trent Anti Racism Coalition has included Trent Radio in their propaganda. That is, Trent Radio has been listed as a member of their organisation without permission or knowledge. While Trent Radio is open to any group who wants to programme, it was felt that Trent Radio's name should not be added lightly to that of a political coalition, particularly given our status as a registered charity. Upon a motion duly made, seconded and carried be it resolved that; Trent Radio directs the President of the corporation (Andrew Fogarasi) to inform the ad hoc "Student Anti-Racism Coalition" that Trent Radio is not a member of their organisation. Trent Radio also directs the President to seek an appropriate remedy with the organisers. It was noted at this time that a public notice of retraction or a letter of apology might also help to rectify the situation. At minimum that Trent Radio's name must struck from their propaganda. The next meeting has been set of Friday, 4 April 1997 in the Peter Robinson College Senior Common Room at 2pm. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 4:40 p.m. ___________________________ ____________________________ Andrew Fogarasi, Chair H. Lisa Howard, Secretary
