Report from the Social Committee for the BoD Meeting 24 June 98 submitted June 23, 1998 / Andrew J Parker Sorry I'm not able to attend this meeting and address any comments you might have - hope this written report will give you an idea of what I've been thinking of. Basically the idea is to get these "CFFF Radio Salons" up and going for the beginning of the new Fall semester/season. As I see it, if we have them toward the end of each month (beginning in Sept. - ending Nov.) we need three to initially get the ball rolling. Should the members of the new Board (or anyone else for that matter), see fit to continue this series in one form or another, it could be reinstated for the following season. I would be nice if this happened in my opinion, and participation/collaboration will be encouraged right from the onset. I also intend to get the word out about these salons effectively. Any suggestions or help from Propaganda or anyone else would be appreciated...(email me : ajparker@trentu.ca with suggestions.) Having said that - here is what I have... Location: undetermined, but probably the Hangman at P.R. Time : evenings - ideally Wednesday (or mid-week) 8 - 9:30 -ish? - with bar after Budget : can't really say. Money for posters / photocopies? Is there any liquid assets to work with at the moment? I will be more than willing to facilitate and/or arbitrate the first three salons, although, as I stated above, input is always welcome. As I indicated in a previous report, the first three will be more or less as follows: SEP 98: "The Tower & the Townies" - Is Trent Radio a community or a university radio station? Is there a difference, a tension? Is Trent Radio "neutral" or is it understood to have a particular political agenda, or class affiliation, by virtue of its connection to Trent University? OCT 98: "What Community?" - Trent Radio is a community radio station. What comprises a real sense of community and where/when is that community experienced? How does it show (or voice) itself? NOV 98: "The University is Socially Unaccountable" - As a public institution (i.e., funded by tax money), the University can no longer hold itself accountable to the public without deferring to the restructuring that many have identified as the "corporate agenda" in the university. Question is; why bother resisting? What is "there" to come under threat except for a particular form of misguided nostalgia? How did we get caught up in "accountability" in the first place and who is actually defining it? Thats it! Please forward any suggestions comments and look for posters/ announcements at the beginning of Sept. p.s. Next "summer social" at JKM's place July 10th. Thanks for offering your place Mr. Muir!!!
