Report of the Music Committee for the Trent Radio AGM - 22Nov98 It's been a busy year. I must say I am overwhelmed by the amount of Email that pours in daily from promoters and record weasels. Although there is the occasional gem buried in the shameless hype and unrelenting sales pitches, much of it is, I'm sorry to say, deletable. None the less, it is a task which should not be taken on alone. I was happy to be able to at least share some of the burden occasionally. As you may know, those that do Email are sent an automatic reply, directing them to the most current Programme Schedule and Music Index. Both are available at the Trent Radio Web Page: http://ivory.trentu.ca/www/tr/trodeo/guide.htm. We also receive many request to indicate how specific artists are charting locally. Trent Radio unfortunately, does not do "tracking". This however has not affected the influx of new CD's, tapes, and the occasional Long Player. (Yes they still press records). Jean Reno tells me that CKCU (Radio Carleton) has followed our lead, and no longer prepares tracking information or a chart, with the receipt of material continuing to come in unabated. Over the course of the year I made an effort to contact record companies whose music genre seemed under-represented in our archives. Specifically those companies that produce new styles of electronic music. I did see some favourable reply's and the station is now on the mailing list for some interesting independent record producers. I did participate in some record archiving parties over the year, in part to keep a tab on the responses, but more for the free pizza. Although a great quantity of material is received by Trent Radio, an alarming amount seems to leave the station, not to be seen again. Many people, when discussing this problem, have referred to the missing music as "borrowed". I'm afraid the truth of the matter is this music has been stolen. I'm sure everyone has experienced the frustration of looking up a title on the computer and scouring the shelves only to find a vacant space that was once occupied by your favourite CD. I find it hard not to take this sort of thing personally. The music in the archive is there for every ones use and when someone takes something out of the station, I've been denied the enjoyment of that piece of music. In an effort to address the problem of archive thefts, Chris Tonelli implemented an inventory monitoring system. It seems to have alleviated the problem somewhat, but I recently experienced the disappointment of the vacant space. Non Music Director Activities Undertaken after the Year-end: On a more positive note (there's a pun there somewhere). In terms of fun, NeXxus, the intended Trent Radio fund raiser, was a tremendous success and free of unsavoury incidents. The attendee's and organizers had a fantastic time and I was proud to have Trent Radio's name associated with such a ground breaking event. NeXxus was a "rave" style dance event that took place on Sept. 26 at the Great Hall, Champlain College. Despite very detailed budget planning, the final numbers did fell short of the goal to raise capitol for Trent Radio. A detailed financial account follows. I would like to thank the Ceilie Pub staff and Stephen Brown for their cooperation, Aberfoyle Water for donating five cases of 500ml spring water bottles, and I would especially like to thank all that volunteered before, during and after the event. Those people made what was at times a daunting task, infinitely more manageable. I would like to thank John Muir, not only for his assistance in returning the Great Hall to it's original state at 4 in the morning, but for his support and faith in my original concept. An event of this style was a difficult sell to the university and John's encouragement and experience gave me the confidence to persevere. And finally all the Dj's and people who turned out to create such a positive atmosphere, despite such poor weather. I believe we had a typhoon that night.
