Whither Spring; Supplementary to the Operations Report for BoD 29Jan99 prepared by John K Muir, VP & GM a) CHEX no logger staffs its TV Road site 24 hours a day, and has supplied a key to provide access. This is a great trust, and will be much more convenient than the old call ahead and stand in the cold system. The ice storm of one year ago, proved to Power Corp, that the TV Road site could be a danger to life and limb. TV operations have moved to 723 Monaghan Rd, while AM & FM are to be located at George & Kings Sts - formerly the Kaos Cafe. b) Bryan Oliver has and is volunteering to develop software specific to our needs. c) Spring Sponsorships will start on 2 Feb 99 - delayed due to computer system setup. d) Rumours abound as to the status of Trent's "college" system. Events should be watched closely. e) A office chair was purchased for our PD, with TRadio kicking in $200 towards the cost. f) A "reminder" letter sent to all programmers &c, drafted by Barb Woolner and myself follows this report. g) A renewal order has been accepted for another year of the present half-hour of brokered programming commencing 1 Feb 99. It should be noted that the only telephone complaints received during the first year occurred when technical problems preempted the broadcasts. h) With the Board's patience a full revised budget is not finished - the student membership amount is still unknown, and the renewal cited above was only executed a week ago. This year's budget was prepared and approved to accommodate several scenarios. It was hoped that a second half-hour of brokered programming would add further $6,000 to revenues this fiscal year with those monies being evenly applied to salaries and capital improvements - a new computer. This revenue source has not materialised so the expenditure items associated with it will be cut. It should be noted however, that a donation made prior to the end of the Winter season made possible the purchase a second hand computer system. i) Its 3am (again) and there's much to prepare before I sleep tonight. --transcript-- Date: Sat, 16 Jan 1999 13:46:58 -0500 (EST) To: All Programmers &c Subject: 1999 Trent Radio Spring Season Notes Hello Programmers, Operators, and Friends of Trent Radio. RADIO PROJECT DAYS: Coming up is Live Music Day (Tues, 19 Jan 99) and Celebrating Black History Month (Friday, 22 Feb 99). *All regular programming is preempted* to make space for these Special Programmes. Both of these days will have great programming! Barb is looking for someone or a team of someones to organise a Radio Project for International Women's Day (8 Mar 99). Anyone interested? NEW COMPUTER in Studio A: Work on this has been going on since the Fall Season last year. With a big effort involving hundreds of volunteer hours over the break, the on-line music sheets are ready for you to use. Especial thanks to the folks at PIPCOM, Bryan Oliver and Sean Daniels The computer will also be used to store and air programme promos, PSAs (public service announcements) and Sponsorships in the next few weeks and there are more uses being planned. The computer programmes and web pages are "self service" and should be reasonably easy to use, even if you have never used a keyboard in your life. There's even a section to report bugs and ask questions of Sean Daniels (our volunteer network guy who's leading this project) and each other. Operators & Programmers will be trained on this over the next few weeks. **** Please do not play with the computer settings. ***** PROGRAMME REVIEW: Programmers, make an appointment with Barb to chat about your programme. Be ready to talk about; how the show is going; what have your learned or how have you benefitted by doing it; what ideas do you have for your programme for the new season; what has been your best or favourite show thus far; have you been playing Canadian Content; how has your foreground content programming gone; and any other feedback you have. Appointments are to be booked for the week of January 25-29. PROGRAMMING TIME SWITCHES: There are a couple of late night programming periods open; Midnight - 2am and Sunday 8-10am. Is anyone interested in moving their programme times? LOGS, MUSIC SHEETS AND SPONSORSHIPS: Please ensure that the LOG sheet has your name or initials on it. Sponsorships will be starting soon ... make sure they are aired and signed off as being aired. TURNTABLE TROUBLES: Styli (needles) are being destroyed at an alarming rate of one a week, as compared to "one" all of last year. Also there's been other STRANGE things going on including; - the lead sinker weights removed from the cartridge shells - some messing around with the tone arm settings and the preamplifiers the turntables plug into. Please see John Muir if you know anything about any of this weirdness. OPERATORS in TRAINING: Thinking about being an Operator now or even next year? Want to hang out with an Operator this season to learn the ropes? Have a look at http://www.trentu.ca/trentradio/op_job.htm and contact Barb or John if interested. OPERATOR needed for WEDNESDAY EVENING: We don't have an Operator for this time, which mean that Studio B is not available. See above if you're interested. REMINDER to EVENING OPERATORS and PROGRAMMERS: As you may be aware Sarah Bailey lives in the apartment above the studios. High volume, low frequencies (like bass and drum) makes her place SHAKE and drives her dog crazy. Please keep it down. ALSO: Operators should ensure that the volume in Studio B is turned OFF prior to locking it up at 10pm. TECHNICAL TRAINING: Production training in Studio B is scheduled for Tuesdays 11am-noon. On-Air training in Studio A is scheduled for Thursdays noon - 1:00. Sign up with Barb ahead of time as space is limited. If you'd like to learn how to use the computer in Studio B, make a time with John (jkmuir@trentu.ca), after you've completed your Studio B training. PROGRAMME PROMO & BACK-UP TAPE: Everyone doing a programme is reminded to create one of each. A Programme Promo is aired each hour. You'll need a Back-Up tapes in case you need to be away. PROF ROCK: This programme airs Mondays at 9:00 and guest hosts invite guest profs to join them. Are you curious what music your English teacher listens to? Contact your prof and programme director to schedule a programme. PLEASE REMOVE WET FOOTWEAR: With all the snowy weather and loads of people coming through each week, the place can gets wet and messy so please take off your boots when you come in. Operators may want to bring in a pair of shoes or slippers to wear in the kitchen as the floor is chilly! NOTE to LATE NIGHT PROGRAMMERS: You are in a special position of trust, and the absence of staff or an Operator, you must follow the rules for late night programming. In addition to filling out the Log and Music sheets the rules include; - locking the outside doors while you are in the building, - if you plan on having a guest or buddy in with you, clearing it with John, in advance, and logging their names and phone numbers in the operator's book. If you have any questions about this, get in touch with John Muir. FINALLY: Have a great season everyone! All the best, Barb Woolner, Programme Director John K Muir, General Manager
