JOB POSTING CJSF Campus Community Radio * PROGRAM COORDINATOR * CJSF is a campus/community radio station located at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC. CJSF is a volunteer-run, grassroots station that provides music, public affairs, informational and cultural programming on issues and viewpoints which are underrepresented in mainstream media. CJSF works in the interests of people, not profit, and serves both the SFU campus and the surrounding off-campus community. The station currently broadcasts on the internet (www.cjsf.bc.ca), on Cable FM, on AM in SFU residences and will be broadcasting at 90.1 FM (450 watts) in 2003. The Program Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of On-Air Programming. S/He works closely with other staff and volunteers, including the Spoken Word Coordinator, Music Coordinator, Training Coordinator and the Programming Committee to fulfill this objective. The Program Coordinator acts as a resource for volunteers by offering training, support, and education in producing on-air programming content and related departmental activities. The coordinator facilitates the goals of the on-air programming volunteers and ensures access to the necessary tools to accomplish these goals. This position will include organizing programming and the station for the transition to the FM band. The Programming Coordinator is one of 4 paid staff, coordinates the activities of the Programming Committee, and is a member of the Executive Committee. Both committees meet bi-weekly to coordinate the day-to-day operations of the station. Programming at CJSF covers various underrepresented issues and communities, including but not limited to: under- represented and mis-represented musical genres/cultures, independent music, arts and culture, environmental, Queer, First Nations, local and global human rights and social justice, ethnic and third language programming. The format includes non-DJ mixing, DJ mixing, news, interviews, panels, documentaries, readings, live performances, outdoor broadcasts and other creative means. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Recruit, train and coordinate volunteers interested/involved in on-air programming * Coordinate the Programming Committee, which includes agenda setting, meeting chairing, minutes posting, presenting and reviewing new program proposals, determining allocation of timeslots, program reviews, long term programming visioning * In conjunction with the Programming Committee, ensure CJSF's On-Air Programming adheres to CJSF's mandate and CRTC regulations * Provide programming specific training including: technical, interview techniques, research, producing a show, how to write for radio etc * Identify and recruit (both on and off campus) to fill needed gaps in programming * Coordinate work study employees and other temporary positions involved in the department * Help in the initiation and coordination of radio show collectives * Ensure CRTC requirements are being meet daily and weekly including logger tape, program logs, sign on/off carts, promise of performance, cancon etc. * Update and revise program logs and training manuals as needed * Maintaining accuracy and updating of the program schedule and website * Ensuring diversity and quality of on-air programming * Scheduling of regular programming, special days of programming, programming features, programming specials, and programming focuses * Support and plan special programming days in conjunction with the Programming Committee * Coordinate other station activities and events in conjunction with the Executive Committee * Maintain connections to other on and off campus organizations SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS * commitment to non-commercial, independent media * excellent interpersonal, communication and motivational skills * well organized with a collaborative working style * ability to work well in a busy, volunteer atmosphere * self motivated, flexible * listening skills, tact, conflict resolution skills * hold vision for station * computer and basic radio/audio production skills * experience with community organizations and independent media * proven ability to share acquired knowledge and skills to a diverse range of people * knowledge of interview skills and techniques, and production of radio programming * experience coordinating volunteers Hours: 20 hours/week Start date: Jan 27th, 2003.
