CJSF is volunteer-run and has over 100 members, including a board of directors, station manager, programming coordinator, several volunteer, and department coordinators. Members are drawn from the campus of SFU and its surrounding communities. CJSF Radio's programming provides music, entertainment, information, issues and viewpoints which may be underrepresented or unavailable through other media. The station is owned by the Simon Fraser Campus Radio Society, an independent non-profit organization. See the station's web site: www.cjsf.bc.ca Spoken word programming at CJSF principally consists of arts/entertainment related programming and public affairs programming, i.e. information oriented and interview-based programming. Spoken word programming may come in 3 main forms: magazine-style (multiple interviews on a variety of topics), documentary (multiple interviews on one topic) or feature (one interview, one topic). SPOKEN WORD COORDINATOR POSITION OBJECTIVES To act as primary contact for CJSF's spoken word department and to coordinate the functioning of the department. To provide continuity in the day-to-day operations of CJSF. To improve and sustain balanced public affairs programming in particular (developing ways for public affairs volunteers to develop ideas and share resources, for example, through collective meetings). To coordinate programming according to CJSF's programming mandate and licence commitments as part of the Programming Sub-Committee (PSC). Day to Day Activities -answer calls and redirect faxes, calls and voice mail messages -open department emails and mail -check and change logger tape -organise equipment and studio access with station manager -maintain tidiness and organization of department office space and library -train and supervise volunteers and work/study employees involved in the department -greet folks as they come in General -meet and direct spoken word volunteers (partnering volunteers with similar interests) -organize and conduct regular spoken word orientation and training -organise spoken word collective meetings, including but not limited to the arts collective (b-hive) and public affairs collective (speak and destroy) -acquire and maintain syndicated programming subscriptions -coordinate "feature" volunteers in taping campus and community talks, interviews, panels etc., for feature programming and the spoken word library -schedule features and syndicated public affairs programming in coordination with other volunteers and the programming coordinator -work with volunteers to record and edit programs as needed -maintain an accessible resource board-sort and post faxes and solicit new sources -update spoken word library of print, recorded and internet resources for spoken word volunteers -forward copies of faxes of interest to relevant programmers -each semester, present to SFU student about spoken word programming -maintain connections to other resource centres on campus -keep track of spoken word volunteers and potential volunteers (maintain up to date phone and email lists of volunteers) and maintain communication in the department (one on one communication and email lists) -as needed, support spoken word volunteers in the form of "how to" workshops on: how to research a show or feature, especially how to find local stories; how to conduct an interview and interview techniques; how to do tape-editing; how to write for radio; how to organise and do a magazine-style or documentary program; others as needed -create and maintain spoken word reference guides on the above topics for volunteers Meeting Participation -attend bi-weekly Executive Committee meetings and regularly held general meetings, and give a report at such meetings -attend bi-weekly PSC meetings to discuss program approval and evaluation -address any lack of spoken word block programming with members of PSC -monitor the quality of existing programs and review new show proposals as member of PSC -support and plan special days of programming through PSC participation Other -Paid staff members are expected to assist with CJSF's fundraising and promotion programs, act as on-air announcers in emergencies, assist in hirings and volunteer recruitment, work with the board of directors to maintain good station communication and attend general and planning meetings of the Society. -They may also be assigned other duties by the station manager. SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS -a commitment to promoting non-commercial media and representing a wide range of cultural works/forms and points of views, in particular those unavailable in commercial media -excellent organisational, communication and research skills -a journalism background or experience or knowledge in motivating and managing others in the production of programming -ability to work well in a busy, volunteer atmosphere -knowledge of all aspects of campus/community radio CRTC regulations -experience with non-commercial media -previous experience with non-profit agencies preferred Part-time, one-year contract position to start August, 2000. The salary for this position will be $9000 per year.
