CKDU is mandated to provide a variety of music and information programming not available through either private or public broadcasters. The station broadcasts to Halifax and the surrounding areas including much of Dartmouth, Bedford and Sackville. CKDU has over 200 volunteers and broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Nature of the Job The position of Spoken Word Co-ordinator is full-time (40 hrs/week). The Co-ordinator will ensure that news and current affairs programming conforms to CRTC regulations and CKDU policies. The Co-ordinator will actively pursue contacts and liase with community organizations, promoting local news and issues through news and spoken word programming. In addition, the Co-ordinator will help to train volunteers in duties of the current affairs department, including interview preparation, program hosting and production. Day-to-day responsibilities include co-ordinating two hours of news programming with current affairs volunteers, maintaining public service announcements, and communicating with the public. The Co-ordinator will also be a member of the staff collective and assist in the general operations of the station as needed. Applicable Skills A keen and demonstrated interest and involvement in local issues and community organizations is necessary. The ability to read and write for broadcast, knowledge of journalism techniques, technical skills and the ability to analyze news are all assets. The Co-ordinator should also have strong organizational and interpersonal skills and some experience training and co-ordinating volunteers. Responsibilities include working with volunteers in the current affairs department to produce two hours of spoken word and news programming daily, facilitating the involvement of students from the University of King's College School of Journalism, and working with the Program Director to develop and co-ordinate focus programming and new spoken word shows.
