Lilli -------------------------------------------------------------------- JOB DESCRIPTION --- CKDU Broadcast Technician (detailed description) SALARY: $9.27/hr for 20hrs/wk (with possible additional hours at discretion of board of directors) NATURE OF JOB: The Broadcast Technician is responsible for performing all minor equipment repairs and preventative maintenance on a regular schedule, and supports the installation, maintenance, and repair of all CKDU's broadcasting equipment. Primary tasks include: - perform scheduled preventative maintenance (including regular cleaning of equipment) - make simple repairs - screen and prioritize technical fault reports - change logger tape on a weekly basis - report to technical committee on a bi-weekly basis - carry out additional tasks as directed by the Board of Directors and committee - source and purchase parts, materials and supplies as needed, in accordance with departmental budget and in consultation with station manager - prepare annual report and make recommendations for yearly departmental budget - comply with CKDU By-Laws and Regulations APPLICABLE SKILLS The Broadcast Technician must be able to work with mechanical equipment; therefore, an electronics background is essential. S/he must have an aptitude for trouble-shooting and planning; but will be assisted in these areas by other staff members. The position requires strong organizational and communication abilities and is best-suited for a self-directed, motivated individual who is able to prioritize and carry out tasks at hand. GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY The Broadcast Technician takes a pro-active role in maintaining the station's technical equipment and meets with a committee on a bi-weekly basis to receive input, feedback and direction. The Broadcast Technician maintains an engineering log detailing activities and will have regular weekly hours to review technical fault report forms. S/he will also be on-call for emergency repairs. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES The responsibilities of the Broadcast Technician include, but are not restricted to: - performing scheduled preventative maintenance on the studio, portable, and transmission equipment including: cleaning; inspection; lubrication; logging; checking transmitter readings; adjusting and changing worn moving parts; testing performance; setting levels and equalization; aligning heads, cartridges, and optics; overhauling systems as needed - making simple repairs and recruiting or contacting service people for major repairs - screening fault reports and trouble-shooting as needed to isolate and understand problems - reporting to, and meeting with, the committee on a bi-weekly basis - maintaining a log of weekly activities and providing a weekly schedule to staff members - sourcing and purchasing parts, materials, and supplies as required and in accordance with a purchasing procedure agreed upon with station manager. - maintaining engineering files on: communications with other broadcasters and Industry Canada; purchasing; equipment manuals and histories; vendor catalogs and circulars; broadcast trade magazines, equipment specifications and so forth - directing and supporting the activities of volunteers in the engineering department. - providing engineering background information for volunteer training (e.g. tape threading paths, head cleaning, patch bay operation) - additional related duties as directed by the committee and the Board of Directors - attend staff and board meetings as required
