PROGRAMME DIRECTOR'S REPORT SEPTEMBER 28 1995 Barb Woolner Preamble I started back to work August 14 after being off since the end of May. During the summer, administrative and programming tasks were done by volunteers. We were broadcasting Monday to Friday 5:00 - midnight and Saturday and Sunday mornings. We shut down August 20 to clean house and started back September 6. Focus for the Broadcasting Year - community involvement (esp. community arts and advocacy groups) - improved training and preparation for new volunteers - diversity of programming possibilities Broadcast Hours Currently, Trent Radio is broadcasting Monday to Friday (5:00 - 10:00), Saturday (8:00 - noon) and Sunday (noon - 3:00). The schedule will grow as new proposals are selected and new programmers trained. My plan is to confirm an evening schedule Monday to Friday as first priority (this is happening this week and next). Next, I will look to a schedule for Sunday as daytime and evening Operators are confirmed. At this time there are few proposals for daytime hours. Another barrier to daytime broadcasting is the lack of production space. Proposals At the end of March, OWSPer Scott Wilson designed three types of programme proposals as we found that only one can not suit the variety of programming we want to encourage. Regular Running (the green one) - applying for a weekly or biweekly, regular running programme "Special" (the pink one) - short term programmes ie. one timeonly or once a term Radio Project (the blue one) - keeping track of who is participating in radio project days Programme Selection A list of criteria was used for programme selection. Several volunteers spent hours reviewing all of the proposals to date. recommendations were given to me from which I used to put a schedule together. This is a long process. We consider and read every proposal. Criticism and suggestions are given. I plan to contact all applicants regarding their "success" in this process. Operators I feel Trent Radio should not broadcast unless we have Operators as support. There were many problems last year, especially on the weekends. For example, on a few occasions programmers not being able to get in to the station. This year, Operators are Liz Scanlon (Monday night), Tony Tarle (Tuesday night), Steve May (Wednesday night), Jonathan Priddle (Thursday night), Doug Mann (Sunday afternoon) and Sheryl Roper (Sunday night). We have an orientation / training meeting Thursday afternoon (prior to board meeting). Operators-at-Large, (previous Operators) Kristina Rawlings, Bryan Hughes, Paul Cleveland, Jaz Kay and Scott Gordon are able to act as fill in Operators. Orientation Organized orientations ensure some "standard" basic information is given to interested parties. Also they help to prevent burn-out of the PD, who last year sounded like a broken record saying the same thing over and over. For many people new to Trent Radio, this may give them a starting point for asking questions. Introduction to Trent Radio Orientation This year all new (potential) volunteers are required to attend an Introductory workshop. Each workshop has lasted 1 - 1 1/2 hours. They were scheduled weekly at a variety of times to accommodate different schedules. Topics included in the discussion include: history of radio in Canada commercial, public and campus / community radio history of Trent Radio Trent Radio's aims role of music and music committee role of spoken word and spoken word committee three programme proposals (regular running, special, project day) programming format what are we looking for in programming variety of ways to participate (thanks to JK Muir, Scott Gordon, Bryan Hughes and Rob Aiken) Programmers' Guide This summer, a Programmers' Guide (information booklet) was produced in order for volunteers to have info in their hot little hands, to refer to when their hearts desire. (thanks to Lisa Howard, Kristina Rawlings, Bruce Tudor, Pauline Harder, Ingrid Harder, Paul Cleveland and Billy Ditchburn) Studio Training Studio training times have been arranged. I am encouraging people interested in radio (ie not only those who get shows) to learn about production in Studio A. (thanks to Scott Gordon, Jaz Kay and Tony Tarle) Activities / Events - sent "women on radio" compilation tape to NGO women's conference in Beijing (sent with local participant Rosemary Ganley) - arranged station tours for first year PRC students (as requested by PRC Intro Week Committee) - co-hosted Introfest with CSG (Shannon McNally looked after Trent Radio interests. Does Introfest need evaluation?) - info table for club days (every year during Intro Week forthree days on the library platform) - info table for Autonomous Club Night (this was the first year; organized by OPIRG at the Hangman) - possibility of Cultural Studies / Trent Radio reading course (Alan O'Conner of the Cult Stud Department interested in working with Trent Radio volunteers) - three radio art evenings (Fridays); live and recorded material - community group orientation meeting; invitations sent (to beheld at Peterborough Public Library) - radio saloon? - Christmas party in November? UPDATES October 26 1995 This report has not yet been "formally" presented to the Board as there has not yet been an official Board meeting. The following notes are a supplement. * as of Monday, October 30 broadcast hours will be: Monday - Wednesday 7am - 1pm & 5pm - 2am Thursday - Friday 7am - 2am Saturday - Sunday 8am - 2am * there are Operators for every night as well as Saturday and Sunday day. There are a few weekday Operators as well. * Intro to Trent Radio and Studio trainings were successful. * I am very pleased with the quality of the programmes that I have listened to in the last month. College news shows, however, need attention. * the afternoon community shows and the afternoon High School shows are off to a slow start. (slow because we need more people interested in helping out) * Reading Break has been trouble free as many programmers prepared a back up show in advance. * I am looking forward to the production studio being completed and / or operational.
